Since 1954, Freure Homes has been building quality homes and communities across Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, and beyond. What began with founder Harold Freure’s vision—a talented plastering contractor who combined his eye for detail with a passion for building—has grown into a family-owned legacy spanning over 70 years and more than 12,000 homes.

1954
The Beginning
The story of Freure Homes started in 1954 with a young plastering contractor named Harold Freure and a single vision: to build something complete.

Harold grew up on a fruit farm outside Beamsville, Ontario, where hard work was a way of life. But while his father saw Harold's future on the farm, Harold had other plans. After high school, he left to learn the plastering trade, working his way through Niagara Falls, Hamilton, and Windsor before landing in Kitchener with the Culp brothers' plastering company. It was there, working alongside established builders like Anson Hallman, that Harold saw an opportunity. He decided to take his meticulous eye for detail and passion for building beyond plastering—to create entire homes. The formula was simple but bold: buy a lot, build a home, sell it, and do it again. What started with that first home on Suffolk Street in Kitchener quickly gained momentum as growing families throughout Waterloo County were drawn to the quality and craftsmanship Harold brought to every project.
1970's
Expansion Era
By 1977, Harold's son David joined the business, marking the beginning of a true family legacy.

Together, they expanded Freure Homes' reach across Ontario—building in communities from Kitchener and Cambridge to Stratford, London, Burlington, and beyond. Harold worked in partnership with some of the region's key land developers and even became a founding member of Buildevco Ltd., a consortium of local builders, increasing our presence across multiple communities and establishing ourselves as a trusted builder.
1990's
Innovation
The 1990s marked a transformative period in residential construction, and Freure Homes, under the leadership of Harold and David Freure, embraced this era of change while staying true to their commitment to quality craftsmanship.

During this decade, the home building industry experienced significant shifts—from open-concept floor plans becoming mainstream to increased focus on energy efficiency. Homes grew larger, with the average new home surpassing 2,000 square feet, and homeowners began demanding more specialized spaces like home offices, media rooms, and luxury master suites. As a builder with over four decades of experience by the 1990s, Freure Homes was well-positioned to adapt to these changing preferences. The company's approach had always been about listening to what growing families needed and delivering homes of lasting comfort and value. This meant incorporating the era's innovations—improved insulation, better windows, more efficient HVAC systems, and flexible floor plans—while maintaining the meticulous attention to detail that had defined the company since 1954. The 1990s also saw Freure Homes continue to expand its reach across Ontario, building in communities from Kitchener and Cambridge to London, Burlington, and beyond. With David Freure working alongside his father, Harold, the company balanced traditional craftsmanship with modern design trends, ensuring each home met both contemporary standards and the timeless quality homeowners expected from the Freure name.
2000's
Diversification
The 2000s marked a period of strategic diversification for Freure Homes as the company leveraged its five decades of experience to expand beyond traditional residential construction.

While staying true to Harold Freure's founding commitment to quality craftsmanship, the company under David Freure's leadership embraced new opportunities across multiple sectors. During this decade, Freure Homes diversified its portfolio to include not just single-family homes and townhomes, but also schools, churches, shopping centers, offices, and factories. This expansion demonstrated the company's versatility and ability to apply its construction expertise across multiple types of projects. Geographically, the company continued to extend its footprint beyond its Kitchener-Waterloo roots, building communities in Cambridge, Stratford, Komoka, London, and Burlington. This regional expansion allowed Freure Homes to bring quality construction to new markets while establishing itself as a builder capable of handling diverse project types across Southern Ontario. Perhaps most notably, in 2006 Freure Homes diversified its commitment to the community by partnering with the Waterloo Regional School Board to participate in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). This program gave high school students hands-on experience building actual homes from foundation to completion—a unique initiative that demonstrated the company's investment in the next generation of builders. By the end of the 2000s, Freure Homes had evolved from a traditional homebuilder into a diversified construction company capable of tackling everything from townhome developments to institutional projects, all while maintaining its family-owned values and commitment to quality that had sustained the business for over half a century.
2020's
Modern Excellence
Over seven decades later, Freure Homes has built more than 12,000 homes—and counting. What hasn't changed is the founding principle Harold established from day one: an unwavering commitment to quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and building homes that stand the test of time.
